LIFESTYLE HABITS

Your DSNW skin is at an increased risk for aging. Why is this?

  • Either you are over the age of 30 and/or

  • Your lifestyle habits increase your risk of skin aging

Which lifestyle habits increase skin aging?

  • Anything that leads to inflammation such as a poor diet, sun exposure, overuse of drugs and alcohol, and recurring injuries

  • Lack of sleep and stress increase cortisol levels which speed aging

  • Sun exposure

  • Excess sugar consumption leads to glycation which causes aging

What cellular processes cause skin aging?

Skin aging occurs when the keratinocyte and fibroblast skin cells are damaged.  This can be due to many cellular processes including inflammation, activation of enzymes called matrixmetalloproteinases, glycation, mitochondrial damage and the inability of cells to break down accumulated garbage.  All of these make the cells function less efficiently.

What characteristics do aged skin cells have?

Skin aging occurs when the keratinocyte and fibroblast skin cells are damaged.  This can be due to many cellular processes including inflammation, activation of enzymes called matrixmetalloproteinases, glycation, mitochondrial damage and the inability of cells to break down accumulated garbage.  All of these make the cells function less efficiently.

What cellular processes cause skin aging?

Aged skin cells have a decreased ability to make collagen, hyaluronic acid and other components that smooth, strengthen and repair skin. Aged cells have a trouble hearing signals from other cells resulting in decreased gene activity and impaired repair processes.

Aged Skin Lacks Four Important Components:

  • Collagen

  • Elastin

  • Heparan Sulfate

  • Hyaluronic Acid
